Werner Schröder

Werner Schröder (March 13, 1914 – July 11, 2010) was a German philologist and Germanistic medievalist.

After studying history, English and German philology and philosophy at the University of Halle, he received his doctorate in 1938 from Hans Herzfeld about the British prewar policy in prehistory and history of the Balkan crisis in 1912. In WWII Schröder was drafted by the Wehrmacht, and fell into Yugoslav captivity. From 1948-1953 Schröder worked as an archivist at the State Archives of Saxony-Anhalt in Magdeburg, then his “Venia Legendi” was given to him as a professor of German philology. In 1959 he took a professorship at the University of Marburg, to leave the GDR. In Marburg he took over the chair of Ludwig Wolff. He refused to teach at other universities in the following years and in 1982 he retired. Schröder was a member of several scientific societies, including the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and the Academy of Sciences at the University of Frankfurt / Main.tumblr_o8sv6syxCz1vrg3euo1_1280tumblr_o8sv6syxCz1vrg3euo2_1280tumblr_o8sv6syxCz1vrg3euo3_1280tumblr_o8sv6syxCz1vrg3euo4_1280
